What Is Mineral Wool? What Are The Characteristics? What Can It Do?

Mineral wool and its products are light, durable, non-combustible, non-rotten, and non-worm-eaten, etc., and are excellent thermal insulation and sound-absorbing materials. Cotton-like short fibers made from silicate melts, including slag wool, rock wool, glass wool, and ceramic fibers. The earliest mineral wool obtained from the crater of Hawaii is called "Fal's hair". Those with metallurgical slag or fly ash as the main raw materials are called slag wool; those with basalt and other rocks as the main raw materials are called "rock wool". After crushing the raw materials into a certain particle size, add additives and other ingredients for batching, and then enter the furnace to melt, form cotton, and pack. There are three kinds of cotton forming process: blowing method, centrifugal method and centrifugal blowing method. Mineral wool and adhesives can be made into various mineral wool products after forming, drying, curing and other processes.

Mineral wool and its products have the characteristics of light weight, durability, non-combustibility, non-rot, mildew, and no insects. They are excellent thermal insulation and sound-absorbing materials. The fiber diameter of mineral wool should not exceed 9 microns; the content of slag balls should not exceed 10%. The bulk density of the raw cotton is 50-100 kg/m³, the bulk density of the product is 40-200 kg/m³ for the felt and 70-500 kg/m³ for the board. The thermal conductivity of mineral wool and products at room temperature is generally 0.041 to 0.07 W/(m·K). Uses Dry-process mineral wool boards and felts can be used to make composite boards for interior and exterior walls of buildings, as well as thermal insulation and sound insulation materials for roofs, floors, and ground structures. Wet and semi-dry rigid boards can be used as sound-absorbing materials for interior decoration such as ceilings and walls in public and civil buildings. Mineral wool felts, tubes and boards can be used as thermal insulation materials for industrial thermal equipment and refrigeration plants.

With the emphasis on energy saving and environmental protection requirements, mineral wool, a veteran of thermal insulation, plays a major role in the new industry. In the building insulation in full swing, the application of mineral wool is also hot, especially in recent years, fires in the polystyrene foam board insulation mode have occurred from time to time, and the building insulation industry has always attached great importance to the selection of insulation materials. Mineral wool is used more and more in the building insulation industry due to its thermal insulation effect and good non-combustibility. The application technology of non-combustible thermal insulation materials is the key research and development in the building energy conservation industry.

In building energy conservation, the construction of mineral wool is mainly divided into two categories, one is dry hanging, the other is pasting, dry hanging is mainly for supporting the external wall of the building to hang glass curtain walls, stone curtain walls, etc., and fill the keel with thermal insulation materials. Pasting is to imitate the construction of polystyrene board. Since the mineral wool board is heavier than the polystyrene board and has a slightly lower internal strength, there are several points to pay attention to in the construction. First, galvanized mesh must be used for protection, and It is necessary to use thermal insulation nails to fix it. For mineral wool products with a large self-weight, the construction process should also be considered to avoid deformation caused by excessive self-weight.
